Since the early days of the conquest of America by the Spaniards, this isthmus became famous for its gold, so much so that the province was then called "Golden Castile,” (Castilla de Oro.) Indeed, the first settlements, Santa Maria la Antigua and Acla, founded near the mouth of the Afrato River, were calculated to become great mining emporiums on account of the large number of mines which were discovered in their vicinity
